Oceana County Housing Needs Assessment Study

As part of the Oceana County Housing Needs Assessment Study currently underway, a series of Housing Focus Groups have been organized in hopes of hearing directly from you … area residents most directly impacted by the ever changing housing market.

Are home prices of concern to you? How will they impact your children? Is there a sufficient supply of  decent rental units? Are your neighbors able to keep up with needed repairs? Is there a need for related investments in water or sewer services near you?  Should there be more or less involvement in housing matters on the part of your local or county government?

How these and a host of other housing questions are answered may depend on whether your concerns are raised at all. Please attend a session near you and speak out. Bring your friends and neighbors and encourage them to do the same.

He’s a volunteer firefighter in Oceana County. A hero by most accounts. He loves his “real” job turning wrenches at a local repair shop. He loves the town he protects. But like many other people here, he can’t afford to buy a home where he works. That’s a real problem. And it’s getting worse.

She’s a certified nurse’s assistant at an assisted-care facility in Oceana County. She loves her job. She loves the people she helps. But what she could do without is the difficulty she’s having in finding housing she can afford.

Housing that’s affordable to Oceana’s workforce is a key to the strength and vitality of our communities. When a part of our community struggles with housing costs, we all suffer. If businesses can find the quality employees they need to expand, they have a hard time holding on to them. The schools, churches and volunteer services that depend on their involvement do without, and the community that was once so desirable isn’t anymore.

Is this a real concern in your community?

To make sure our communities remain desirable places to live, Oceana County is working with the Oceana Housing Council to identify housing needs that exist today and that might be expected over the next 5 to 10 years. They need to hear from you. Tell your friends. Bring your neighbors.
