About us
ABOUT US ... CHM, the non profit parent organization for OHP, began providing affordable fix up and repair services to Oceana homeowners in 1987. Taking on the OHP name signaled a major change in 1993 when we began serving new homebuyers rather than homeowners, purchasing homes scattered across the county and selling these newly rehabbed homes to low and moderate income buyers on affordable terms. New home construction was added in 1998. As the cost to purchase and rehab existing homes continued to escalate, OHP began to focus on building new homes. At about the same time, scattered site projects gave way to projects located within existing communities where jobs and services, including utilities, were more accessible to buyers. Today, while an opportunity may arise to take on a rehab or build on scattered sites, OHP is focused on developing small subdivisions where our new homes will, hopefully, lead to the development of homes built by the traditional private market. Non construction activities have also changed considerably over the years. From an early focus on assisting owners make needed repairs, in 1993 OHP turned its attention to preparing prospective homebuyers for ownership. In 2002, at the urging of the Oceana Housing Council, a then newly formed group charged with coordinating area efforts to end homelessness, OHP began providing emergency housing assistance to renters unable to keep up with ever rising rental costs. Helping consumers at all income levels find scarce rental units was a logical and immediate addition. In late 2004 OHP took on the administration of Oceana County’s homeowner rehab program, essentially bringing the organization full circle, again helping existing owners fund needed repairs. With such growth and change, one constant has remained - OPPORTUNITY is the only gift we provide. There are no “giveaways”. The opportunity to live in safe, decent and affordable housing is such an incredible drive for the families we serve that in the end its clear - it’s not about our services or whether someone “deserves” a safe, decent and affordable home - its simply about the hard work Oceana families can accomplish when and where opportunity exists.
